The shipping industry faces a significant risk with enclosed space entry, leading to numerous fatalities each year. However, we have exciting news to share. The IMO Container and Carriage of Cargo Sub-Committee (CCC9) has approved a groundbreaking work package to address and minimize deaths related to enclosed spaces. With the support of IMarEST, this Committee has been actively involved in this initiative for several years. Their objective is to develop a comprehensive set of regulations for enclosed space entry, aiming to improve upon the current system’s shortcomings. Using the hierarchy of hazard controls, they are determined to tackle this problem from all angles.

In addition to regulatory development, the Human Element Industry Group (HEIG), a coalition of NGOs with an interest in seafarers’ well-being, is actively working on a proposal to address time pressure. This proposal received approval at the IMO Marine Safety Committee in June. The group is currently drafting a circular that may be informally presented at the next Human Element Training and Watchkeeping Sub-Committee.

Meanwhile, they have just announced the release of three guides on time pressure in the maritime industry. These guides will be provided free of charge and serve as valuable resources for professionals seeking to understand the impact of time pressure on maritime incidents. Covering topics such as stress recognition, realistic timelines, and practical advice to reduce pressure, these guides equip individuals with essential knowledge.
