ClO2 Generator: Unique Technology

The heart of our treatment system: a chlorine dioxide generator that delivers a dilute solution of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) to treat incoming ballast water. The fully automated, compact generator has few moving parts and is the same physical size for all systems.

A Modular Treatment System to Optimize Space

Ecochlor’s Treatment System is a rugged skid mounted system that consists of the ClO2 generator, self-contained chemical tanks, associated piping, valves and automated PLC controls.

Scalable: Sized for Ship and Ballast Water Needs

The Ecochlor® BWTS is easily scalable for different sizes of ships and ballast volumes. Larger systems are especially space efficient with ten times the capacity for less than twice the footprint. The larger systems are also particularly cost competitive when compared to other technologies.

How it works

  • The generator operation is quite simple. When the system is off, there are no chemicals in the generator. The only moving parts are the internals of the chemical pumps.

  • When the generator receives a start command from the ship’s ballast water system, the supply water booster pump starts up and a small amount of water flows through the generator. The water can be seawater or fresh water and is only needed during ballasting. As water flows through a venturi, a vacuum is formed in the mixing chamber.

  • Once the vacuum is formed, the chemical pumps start and meter precise amounts of Purate BWT and sulfuric acid into the mixing chamber. Pump rates are controlled by the PLC in proportion to the ballast water flow rate.

  • As the Purate BWT and acid mix together in the mixing chamber, a chemical reaction takes place and ClO2 is formed, which then fills the mixing chamber.

  • The ClO2 is then drawn into the venturi by the vacuum created. The ClO2 becomes an entrained gas in the supply water, and is fed to the point of injection in the ballast water system.
